Manual Handling and Ergonomics

The aim of this course is to provide dental professionals with the ability to recognise manual handling and ergonomic risks associated with dentistry, and to provide methods to help avoid developing work-related musculo-skeletal disorders.

Learning objectives


On completion delegates will be able to:


  • Define the term ‘Manual Handling’.

  • Identify Employers’ and Employees’ legal responsibilities surrounding manual handling.

  • Give examples of manual handling tasks in a dental setting.

  • Identify risks associated with incorrect manual handling technique.

  • Carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for manual handling tasks.

  • Demonstrate the correct lifting technique.

  • Define the term ‘Ergonomics’.

  • Identify risks associated with ergonomics in dentistry including musculo-skeletal disorders (MSDs).

  • Recognise methods to avoid MSDs including equipment selection, VDU arrangement, improving posture and muscle strengthening exercises.
